The experience

The Chapel of Apparitions at Fatima is where five of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary occurred in 1917: a rural property called Cova da Iria that became one of the world's largest Catholic pilgrimage sites, drawing six million visitors a year. Your guide walks you through the sanctuary complex: the chapel itself, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, and the newer Basilica of the Holy Trinity. A few minutes away, Valinhos preserves the houses where the three shepherd children (Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta) lived, the places they knew before the apparitions changed their lives.

From there the route turns to Batalha Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site built over two centuries in Portuguese late Gothic style. King John I commissioned it in 1386 as thanks to the Virgin Mary for victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota. Dominican friars occupied it from 1388 onward, and seven kings of Portugal saw it rise to completion around 1563. The stonework and scale make it unmissable for anyone interested in medieval Portuguese architecture.

Nazaré, a traditional fishing village, is where you'll see fish drying on the beach and the local women in their distinctive dress. The village sits above the Nazaré Canyon, which creates the biggest waves in the world: depending on the season, you may see them from shore. In 2013 the American surfer McNamara rode a wave here that broke the world record at around 30 meters high. The final stop is Óbidos, a medieval walled town that belonged to the Templars and later became a wedding gift from King Dinis to his wife, Queen Isabel. The town funded itself through the Portuguese queens who lived there, and it's where you'll taste Ginjinha, the regional liqueur Óbidos is known for.
