experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the silence at Fatima to feel so heavy — not sad, just… thick. Our guide, Joana, handed me a candle and said people come from all over Portugal to light one here. The air smelled faintly of wax and something herbal I couldn’t place. We watched an old couple shuffle by, murmuring prayers. I’m not religious but there was something about the place that made me want to whisper too.

Driving out of Fatima, Joana told us stories about the shepherd children — she pointed out their little houses as we passed Valinhos. I tried to imagine being that young and seeing visions; honestly, I’d probably have hidden under my bed. The road to Batalha was lined with wildflowers. When we stepped inside the monastery, the stone felt cool even though it was warm outside. There’s this unfinished chapel where sunlight slants in at weird angles — it makes you feel small in a good way.

Nazaré was louder than I thought — gulls everywhere and the smell of grilled fish drifting from open windows. Lunch was a blur of clams and white wine (I spilled some on my shirt, classic). Joana laughed and said everyone does that at least once here. She took us up to see the spot where those giant waves crash in winter; today the sea was calm but you could still hear it thumping below.

Obidos felt like stepping into someone’s storybook — crooked cobblestone lanes, blue-and-yellow houses with flowerpots balanced on ledges. We wandered along the old town walls (don’t look down if you’re scared of heights). At a tiny shop we tried ginjinha in a chocolate cup; it’s sweet and sharp at the same time. I can still taste it when I think back on that day — or maybe it’s just wishful thinking.
