You travel in a minivan with a maximum of seven other people to Fátima's Sanctuary and Basilica, walk through the Gothic arches of Batalha Monastery, stand at the Sítio viewpoint above Nazaré's cliffs, and wander the medieval lanes of Óbidos, where you taste ginjinha in a chocolate cup. Entry to Batalha and all transport from Lisbon are included; you arrange your own lunch in Nazaré from the restaurants on the viewpoint. The Experience

Your guide is waiting at the office when you arrive, and within minutes you're in a minivan heading north out of Lisbon with seven other people max — small enough that you actually hear what's being said, not small enough to feel awkward. The drive to Fátima takes about an hour, and your guide uses it to set up what you're about to see: the Sanctuary itself, the Chapel of Apparitions where the visions happened, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary with the tombs of the three shepherd children. You get free time there to walk around, sit, pray if that's your thing, or just stand in the quiet and let it land however it lands.

After Fátima, the minivan cuts east to Batalha Monastery, a Gothic-Manueline structure that was built after Portugal won a battle in 1385 and decided to build something that would last. The arches are intricate, the stonework is carved so densely you can spend ten minutes on a single wall, and the church itself is vast enough that your footsteps echo. You walk through it with your guide, who points out the details most people miss — the way the columns taper, the symbols worked into the stone. Then you're back in the minivan heading toward the coast.

Nazaré hits you differently. You drive up to the Sítio viewpoint and suddenly there's the Atlantic spread out below you, the cliffs dropping straight down, and if the swell is up, you might see the white water far below. Your guide gives you the context — this is where the giant waves happen, where surfers come from all over the world — and then you have free time to eat lunch in one of the typical restaurants up there, the kind where locals go, not the tourist trap next door. The view doesn't change while you eat.

Óbidos is the last stop, and it's the one that feels like stepping backward. Cobblestone lanes so narrow two people have to turn sideways, whitewashed houses with flower boxes, a castle on the hill that you can walk up to if you want. At the end, you get a small glass of ginjinha — the local cherry liqueur — served in a chocolate cup that you can eat after you drink it. It's the kind of detail that sounds corny until you're standing there doing it, and then it's the thing you remember. The minivan brings you back to Lisbon in the early evening, and you've covered four different Portugal's in one day.
