Cook a traditional island dish in someone's home kitchen, not a tourist classroom.

A hands-on cooking class in Angra do Heroísmo where you learn to make Alcatra, the Azores' most traditional slow-roasted meat dish, and bread baked in a wood-fired oven at a local home. You'll prepare the meal from scratch, enjoy starters and local wines while it cooks, then sit down to eat what you made alongside local cheeses and a traditional dessert. Hotel pickup and drop-off included.

The experience

The class starts at a private home with views across the property, where you'll work alongside locals to prepare Alcatra (meat and vegetables layered and slow-roasted in a ceramic pot), and shape dough for bread that goes into the wooden oven. While everything cooks, you'll taste grilled linguiça and morcela with local cheeses and bread, and you're free to walk the grounds, see the bees, and pick fruit if it's in season. The whole experience runs about five hours.

When the Alcatra and bread are ready, you'll sit down to eat them with unlimited local wine, beer, and soft drinks, plus a traditional dessert. Everything you need is included: hotel pickup and drop-off, all the ingredients and instruction, and the meal itself. The guide speaks English, Spanish, or Portuguese depending on your group, and children from age three are welcome as long as an adult is with them.

Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years). Children under 3 can't be included in the booking.

What exactly is Alcatra, and why is it such a big deal on Terceira?

Alcatra is the island's most traditional dish: meat and vegetables layered in a ceramic pot and slow-roasted for hours until everything melds together. It's what locals make for celebrations and family gatherings, and learning to prepare it the way it's meant to be made is the heart of this class.

Do I need cooking experience to join this class?

No. The class is hands-on instruction from locals who will walk you through each step, from layering the Alcatra to shaping and baking the bread in the wooden oven. You'll learn as you work.

What happens while the Alcatra and bread are cooking?

You'll taste local starters (grilled linguiça and morcela with cheese and bread), and have time to walk around the property, see the bees and fruit trees, and pick fruit if it's in season. The cooking takes time, so there's no standing around waiting.

Is hotel pickup really included, or is that extra?

Hotel pickup and drop-off in Angra do Heroísmo are included in the price. The guide will collect you and bring you back when the class ends.
