itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Whale shark swim and Kawasan canyoneering

  • Swim with whale sharks in Oslob
  • Observe whale sharks safely
  • Enjoy lunch provided
  • Begin Kawasan Falls canyoneering
  • Trek, climb, and jump cliffs
  • Swim through turquoise canyon pools
  • End at Kawasan Falls in Badian

I’ll be honest — I almost missed the van because my alarm didn’t go off. So there I was, running down the hotel hallway in wet flip-flops at 2:10am, hair still half-damp from a midnight shower. Our driver just grinned and said, “No worries, happens all the time.” The roads out of Cebu City were quiet and dark, except for the odd rooster crowing somewhere. By sunrise we reached Oslob, and I could already smell salt on the air — plus someone grilling sticky rice nearby.

Our guide, Mark, handed me a snorkel mask and tried to explain how to keep it from fogging up (“Just spit inside!”). I’d seen photos of whale shark swimming in Cebu before but nothing really prepares you for seeing those huge spotted shapes sliding under your toes. The water was cooler than I expected — kind of a shock at first. When I finally put my face in, there was this sudden hush underwater except for muffled shouts above. One of the whale sharks drifted so close I could see tiny fish hitching rides on its belly. Mark kept an eye on us but let us float quietly if we wanted.

After breakfast (rice cakes with coconut — not bad), we drove toward Badian for canyoneering at Kawasan Falls. It’s about two hours but honestly felt shorter since everyone started swapping stories about who panicked most during the swim (me). The canyoneering bit is wild — you scramble over rocks that feel slick as soap, leap off ledges (some higher than my apartment window), and wade through pools that look fake-blue in photos but are actually that color. At one point our other guide, Li, pointed out a bird’s nest tucked into a rock crevice and joked it was his “summer house.”

I hesitated on one of the bigger jumps — legs shaking — but Li just said, “You don’t have to if you don’t want.” No pressure at all. But then some local kids cheered from below so… yeah, I jumped. Still get goosebumps thinking about it. Lunch after was simple grilled chicken and noodles by the riverbank; nothing fancy but everything tasted better when you’re tired and dripping wet. We rode back to Cebu with muddy shoes and everyone half-asleep.
