The Experience

I’ll be honest — I was nervous about the cliff jumping part. But standing on that boat off Pescador Island, watching the sun hit the water all glassy blue, it felt like anything could happen. Our guide, Mark, handed me a snorkel and grinned like he’d seen this mix of excitement and panic before. The water was cooler than I expected, almost fizzy on my skin. Suddenly there were sardines everywhere — a silver cloud moving as one. I tried to reach out but they darted away so fast you’d think they were playing with us.

After that we drifted over to turtle point near Moalboal. I didn’t expect to see one up close but there it was, just gliding along like it had all the time in the world. Mark pointed and whispered something in Bisaya — I wish I’d caught it — but honestly I was too busy holding my breath (literally and figuratively). There’s something about seeing a turtle underwater that makes you feel small in a good way. The salt stuck to my lips for hours after.

Then came the canyoneering part in Badian. Four hours sounds long until you’re actually scrambling over rocks and sliding into pools so clear you can see your own feet waving below. The guides kept things light — one of them did a cannonball off a ledge just to make us laugh (it worked). Lunch after felt earned; rice never tasted so good. My legs are still sore but in that satisfying way where you know you did something real.
