A Cessna flight over drawings only visible from the air, plus sea lions at dawn

You're picked up early from your Lima hotel, taken by private van to Paracas, and boarded on a speedboat to the Ballestas Islands to watch sea lions, penguins, and seabirds in their habitat. After lunch in Ica, you drive to Pisco airport and fly in a 12-seat Cessna over the Nazca Lines—massive geoglyphs visible only from the air—before returning to Lima by evening. The tour includes the van, boat, flight, guide, and lunch; you pay airport fees and the overflight permit separately at the airport.

The Experience

The Cessna leaves Pisco airport mid-morning, and for the next hour you're looking down at lines carved into the desert floor centuries ago—a monkey with a spiral tail, a hummingbird, a spider, a condor—each one so large you'd walk past it on the ground without knowing what you were seeing. The aircraft is small, a 12-seat Caravan, and the windows sit a bit high, so you lean forward to get the angle. Nobody really knows why the Nazca Lines are there. Some think they're an astronomical calendar. Some think ritual. What matters is that you can't see them from anywhere but the sky, and once you're up there, they stop being a mystery and just become real.

But the day starts earlier, before sunrise, when you're picked up from your Lima hotel and driven south to Paracas. The speedboat to the Ballestas Islands leaves from the pier there, and on the way you pass the Chandelier—a giant figure etched into the cliff in the same style as the Nazca Lines, except this one you can actually see from sea level. The islands themselves are loud and crowded with life: sea lions hauled out on the rocks, Humboldt penguins standing on ledges, pelicans and cormorants everywhere. Your guide points out which birds nest where, which seals are juveniles, what the colony dynamics are. It's not a quiet observation—the animals don't care that you're there, and the boat rocks a bit in the swell.

After the islands, there's lunch at a local restaurant in Ica, and then the drive to Pisco airport. This is where the weight check happens—the aircraft has an 800-kilogram total weight limit, so passengers get weighed at the gate. It's straightforward, not awkward, just part of the logistics. You'll also pay the airport usage fee and the Nazca Lines overflight permit at the counter. Then you board, strap in, and the pilot takes you up over the pampa. The flight itself is smooth enough, though motion sickness is possible if you're sensitive to small aircraft. Most people aren't. After the overflight, it's a bus ride back to Lima, arriving in the evening.

The whole day is long—you're moving from 5 or 6 in the morning until dark—but it's structured so that the two main things (the islands and the lines) don't blur together. You see living animals up close, then you see ancient drawings from above. Neither one prepares you for the other.

Motion sickness is possible on the Cessna flight over the Nazca Lines. If you're prone to it, consider taking medication before boarding. The flight lasts about an hour.
Are there weight restrictions for the flight?
Yes. The aircraft is a 12-seat Cessna Caravan with an 800-kilogram total weight limit. Passengers are weighed at Pisco airport before boarding as part of standard safety procedure.
Is the tour suitable for children?
The Ballestas Islands boat trip is fine for most ages. The Nazca Lines overflight is not recommended for children under 8 years old due to the aircraft type and window height.
