After Miraflores, the boat crosses Miraflores Lake—a small artificial freshwater body between the two Pacific-side lock systems—and then enters the Gaillard Cut, also called Culebra Cut because of its snake-like curves. This section was carved straight through the Continental Divide, and the guide points out the geological layers and the history embedded in the rock walls.
