Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Agua Clara Locks and Surroundings

  • Travel to Agua Clara Visitor Center
  • Observe ships passing through locks
  • Enjoy panoramic views from observation platforms
  • Visit Fort San Lorenzo ruins
  • See the Atlantic (Third) Bridge
  • Return to Panama City

The experience

The Agua Clara Locks sit about an hour and a half from Panama City. You arrive at the visitor center and move through terraced platforms and open viewing areas built into the landscape, where you can watch the actual operation of the expanded Canal: the massive container ships, tankers and bulk carriers that pass through daily. The observation decks frame Lake Gatún and the lush vegetation around it. Bring a camera. The scale of the vessels and the mechanics of the locks are the kind of thing people photograph and replay.

Fort San Lorenzo comes next. The fortress dates to the 17th and 18th centuries and sits on the coast. It was recently restored for tourism and carries UNESCO World Heritage status. The military architecture and the setting on the water give it weight that photographs alone don't convey. After the fort, you cross the Third Bridge, officially the Atlantic Bridge, a 4,605-meter span that opened as an extension of the Canal corridor. At 530 meters between its central columns, it holds the world record for a four-lane concrete cable-stayed bridge. Crossing it and seeing the landscape below is part of the itinerary, not a drive-by.

The whole outing runs about seven hours door to door. Your guide speaks Spanish and travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle sized for up to seven people. Water and WiFi are provided. Entrance to the Agua Clara Visitor Center costs $10 per person. Entry to Fort San Lorenzo is $5 per person: both paid on arrival, not included in the tour price.
