Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Wadi Sahtan and surroundings

  • Visit Seeb fish souk
  • Drive north of Rustaq to Wadi Sahtan
  • Pass Wadi Bani Ghafir, Wadi Mabrah, Wadi Hidaq
  • Reach Wadi entrance via narrow tracks
  • Have picnic lunch
  • Visit Sahtan Bowl (Mandoos)
  • Return to Muscat

The experience

The day begins at Seeb fish souk, where the market activity frames the start before the drive heads inland. From there, the route runs north of Rustaq and follows the road that connects toward Ibri, threading through a series of connected wadis (Bani Ghafir, Mabrah and Hidaq) on progressively narrower tracks. This is not a paved highway. The vehicle navigates the wadi floor itself, and the landscape opens gradually as you move deeper into Oman's interior.

Sahtan Bowl, known locally as Mandoos (the Chest of Oman), sits at the end of this route. The name reflects its isolation: the bowl is a natural amphitheater of rock and water, cut off from the wider landscape by the wadi walls that surround it. A picnic lunch happens here, in the middle of the day, before the return journey to Muscat. The whole outing runs seven to eight hours from pickup to drop-off.

The vehicle is a 4WD capable of the narrow tracks. Groups stay small, with a maximum of six passengers per vehicle. Your guide speaks English and travels with the group. Hotel or port pickup is included, along with bottled water, national park fees and all fuel. If you are a cruise passenger, provide your ship's name, docking time and re-boarding time at booking so the return aligns with your departure.

Top questions

Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 12 years); Infant (under 4): free.

What is Wadi Sahtan and why is it called the Chest of Oman?

Wadi Sahtan is a natural bowl formation deep in Oman's interior wadi system, isolated by the rock walls that surround it. The local name Mandoos, meaning chest, reflects how remote and enclosed the site is. It sits at the end of a series of connected wadis accessible only by narrow tracks.

How do you get to Sahtan Bowl from Muscat?

The route starts at Seeb fish souk, then heads north of Rustaq and follows the road toward Ibri. The vehicle crosses through Wadi Bani Ghafir, Wadi Mabrah and Wadi Hidaq on progressively narrower tracks before reaching the bowl itself. The journey is made by 4WD to handle the wadi terrain.

What happens during the day, and how long does the tour take?

The tour runs seven to eight hours total. It begins at Seeb fish souk, continues through the wadi system on narrow tracks, and reaches Sahtan Bowl for a picnic lunch in the middle of the day. The return journey to Muscat follows the same route.

What is included in the price, and what do I need to bring?

Transport by 4WD, an English-speaking guide, hotel or port pickup and drop-off, bottled water, national park fees, local taxes and fuel surcharge are all included. Bring a valid passport. Lunch is not included, though the picnic stop allows time to eat your own food or purchase supplies beforehand.
