The experience
The tour leaves Muscat heading east through the Sumail Gap, the mountain pass dividing the Western and Eastern Hajars. A photo stop at Fanjah frames the wadi and oasis before you reach Wadi Bani Khalid, where date plantations line the approach. The wadi itself holds deep, cool pools fed by natural springs. The water is clear enough for a long swim, and this is the main water stop of the day.
From there the route turns to Wahiba Sands, the undulating golden desert that fills the second half of the tour. Your guide drives the 4WD across the dunes to show the angles and technique, stops to position you for photos with the family or solo, and lets you see how the vehicle handles the terrain. Lunch happens at a local restaurant before the return to Muscat, which takes roughly two hours depending on traffic.
The tour runs seven to nine hours total. You travel in a private 4WD with seating for up to six, and the guide speaks English. Hotel or port pickup is included, as are bottled water, national park fees and fuel surcharge. Lunch is at your own cost.
