The pools at Wadi Qurai sit in a canyon where the hike itself is part of the reward.

A full-day tour from Muscat combines two stops (Fanja Old Village with its traditional souq, then Wadi Qurai), where you hike to crystal-clear pools set against mountain walls and swim in the water. A licensed Omani guide leads the day in English, handles all transport from your Muscat location, and times the stops so you see both the village and the wadi without rushing either one.

The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel or any location in Muscat, then a 40-minute to 1-hour drive to Fanja Old Village. Once there, you explore the traditional souq at your own pace: wandering through the historic buildings, taking photos, and shopping for local items if you want them. The village sits in a pocket of older Oman, and the guide stays with you to answer questions about what you're seeing without pushing you through on a schedule.

After Fanja, a 30-minute drive takes you to Wadi Qurai. From the trailhead, you hike to the wadi itself: a walk through the canyon that opens onto pools of clear water backed by steep rock walls. The hike is moderate and the pools are the destination: you can swim, float, and sit on the rocks with views of the canyon around you. The water is cold year-round, fed by underground springs, and the canyon walls keep the sun from reaching the deepest parts of the pools even in midday heat.

The return drive to Muscat takes about 90 minutes. Your guide will drop you at your original pickup point or anywhere else in the Muscat area that works for your plans. The whole day runs eight hours from start to finish, including both drives, both stops, and the time in the water.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Arabic.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is Fanja Old Village like, and how long do you spend there?

Fanja Old Village is a historic settlement with traditional architecture and a working souq where locals shop and sell goods. You have time to wander through the village, take photos, and browse the souq at your own pace. The guide accompanies you and can explain what you're seeing, but does not rush you through.

Can I bring my own food and drinks, or is lunch provided?

Water is provided throughout the day. Lunch is not included in the tour, so bring your own food or plan to eat before or after the tour if you prefer a meal. The guide can suggest where to eat in Muscat before pickup or after drop-off.

What should I bring for swimming at Wadi Qurai?

Bring a swimsuit, towel, and water shoes or sandals with grip for walking on wet rocks. The water is cold year-round, so a quick dip rather than a long swim is typical for most visitors. Sunscreen and a hat are useful for the hike and time on the rocks.
