The experience

Wadi Tiwi sits two hours south of Muscat, reached by a 4WD vehicle on off-road trails that climb through mountain scenery. The wadi itself is a narrow canyon carved by seasonal water, its walls rising steeply on both sides. You spend roughly three hours here, moving between pools deep enough to swim in and sections where you walk the streambed itself. The water stays cool year-round, fed by springs that emerge from the rock.

The route also passes Bimmah Sinkhole, a collapsed cave opening into a freshwater pool ringed by limestone cliffs. You stop to photograph it before moving on to Fins Beach, where tall rock formations frame the shoreline and the light changes as the sun drops. The drive back to Muscat takes another two hours, so the full day runs from pickup around 8:30 AM until evening. Bottled water comes with you throughout, and the guide speaks English and Arabic.

Children from age five are welcome. The terrain involves scrambling over rocks and wading through water, so bring a change of clothes and secure footwear. The 4WD vehicle handles the rough approach road, but once inside the wadi you're on foot.

What is Wadi Tiwi actually like when you get there?

Wadi Tiwi is a mountain canyon with a stream running through it, bordered by high rock walls. The water collects in pools deep enough to swim in, and you walk between them on the streambed itself, passing small waterfalls and springs. It's narrow enough that the walls shade much of the canyon floor.

How much time do you actually spend swimming and hiking in the wadi?

You spend approximately three hours in Wadi Tiwi itself, moving between the pools and walking sections of the canyon. The rest of the eight-hour day includes the two-hour drive each way from Muscat and stops at Bimmah Sinkhole and Fins Beach.

What does the pickup from Muscat involve?

Pickup happens at your hotel, port or airport in the Muscat area around 8:30 AM. A 4WD vehicle collects you and takes the two-hour drive south on off-road trails to reach Wadi Tiwi, so you don't need to arrange your own transport.

What should you bring for swimming in the wadi?

Bring a swimsuit, a change of clothes, and secure footwear like hiking shoes or water sandals. The streambed has rocks and the canyon floor can be slippery. Sunscreen and a hat help in the open sections. Lunch is not provided, so bring snacks or eat before departure.
