The experience

The hike takes about an hour up Cerro Negro's bare black slopes: the volcano last erupted in 1999 and has no vegetation to break the terrain. You'll reach the main crater, which often emits smoke and gas, and walk the rim to the highest point. From there, the view opens across the Pacific Ocean, the colonial city of León below, and a line of other volcanoes (Telica and San Cristóbal among them) stretching across the horizon. The steep angle and loose volcanic material make the descent fast, which is exactly why boarding works here.

After instruction and a safety briefing, you put on a protection suit, gloves, goggles and a handkerchief, then take a wooden board down the slope. Your feet act as the brakes: dig in to slow down, ease off to pick up speed. The faster you go, the more intense the ride becomes. If you'd rather not board, you can walk or run down instead and still cover the same ground in a fraction of the time it took to climb. Either way, the descent is fast enough that the whole activity (hike, crater, and slide) fits into a half-day window.

Private transportation picks you up from your hotel and brings you back. The guide speaks English or Spanish and leads the whole experience. Seasonal fruit is provided during the day. The activity suits anyone with at least moderate fitness. Children are welcome from age six.

How steep is the volcano boarding run down Cerro Negro?

The slopes are steep enough that boarding reaches the bottom quickly, which is why the descent takes little time compared to the hour-long hike up. The angle and loose volcanic material from the 1999 eruption create the surface that makes boarding possible.

Can I walk down instead of boarding if I change my mind?

What does the view from the top of Cerro Negro show?

From the crater rim at the highest point, you can see the Pacific Ocean, the colonial city of León, and a volcanic chain stretching across the horizon that includes Telica and San Cristóbal volcanoes.

What's included in the activity, and what do I need to bring?
