The experience

Cerro Negro is one of the few active volcanoes on earth where you can actually slide down the mountainside on a board. The day starts with pickup from your hotel in León and a drive of roughly an hour to the volcano's base. From there you hike upward through rocky terrain for 45 minutes to an hour, climbing toward views of the Los Maribios mountain range and the contrasts between hardened lava and green landscape that surround the peak.

Once you reach the summit at 728 meters, you get a few minutes to take in the view and photos before your guide fits you with the full safety kit (jumpsuit, helmet, goggles and gloves), and walks you through how sandboarding works. Then you board down the sandy slope on the wooden board, which is where the adrenaline rush comes in. The descent is the core of the experience. The guide controls the pace and stays with you. After you finish, there's a quick snack and water to cool down before the drive back to León.

Your guide is bilingual in English and Spanish, so language is not a barrier. The operator provides all the protective gear, a digital photos and videos package, a souvenir bandana, entrance fees and private 4X4 transport. You'll also get a tourist certificate at the end.
