The experience
Cerro Negro is a cinder cone volcano with slopes of loose black sand. The terrain that makes sandboarding possible. You start at the nature reserve entrance with your guide, who explains the volcano's role in the region before the hike begins. The ascent to the rim takes most of the morning, and the guide sets the pace so the group stays together. Once at the top, you suit up in the protective gear provided: a board, goggles, gloves and a padded suit that keeps the sand from your skin on the way down.
The descent is the payoff. You ride the board down the steep black slope in a controlled slide. It is not a ski run but a fast walk on sand, and the guide demonstrates the technique before you start. Most people make the run in a few minutes. After you reach the base, transportation takes you back to León, and the guide hands over the digital photographs from the day.
The operation is locally run and supports community initiatives in León. Your guide is accredited and fluent in English or Spanish, and the tour keeps groups small enough that everyone gets attention on the hike and the slope. A soda is included to refuel after the ride.
