The experience
Your guide meets you at your hotel in León and drives you an hour into the countryside in a 4WD vehicle to reach Cerro Negro. The volcano is one of the youngest on the planet (the last major eruption was in 1999), and the black sand on its slopes is still loose and fast. Once you arrive at the base, the walk to the rim takes about an hour depending on your fitness. The path climbs through volcanic terrain and gets steeper as you near the top. At the summit you'll stand on the crater's edge with views across the landscape before the main event.
The boarding itself is the reason you came. You'll strap on a wooden board (similar to a snowboard), put on the protective suit, gloves and glasses the operator provides, and descend the crater slope. The black sand is abrasive and moves under you as you go down, so the ride is fast and unpredictable. Nothing like a groomed run. Most people take several runs if time allows, walking back up between descents. By the end of the afternoon you'll head back down the volcano and return to León, arriving in time for lunch.
The tour runs with a live guide who speaks English or Spanish, and groups stay small: a minimum of two people per booking means you won't be in a crowd. Bring at least two liters of water. The sun is intense on the black sand and there's no shade on the slope. The activity suits travelers with moderate fitness. The hike is steady but not technical, and the boarding itself is about balance and nerve rather than strength.

The walk to the rim takes about one hour depending on your physical condition. The terrain is volcanic and the path gets steeper as you approach the summit.
What do I need to bring for the sand boarding?
Bring at least two liters of water: the black sand reflects intense sun and there's no shade on the slope. The operator provides the board, protective suit, gloves and glasses. You just need to wear clothes you don't mind getting sandy and bring sun protection.
Is Cerro Negro actually an active volcano?
Cerro Negro is one of the youngest volcanoes on the planet and was last active in 1999. The black sand covering the crater is still loose volcanic material, which is what makes the boarding possible and fast.

The activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or those who are pregnant.
