The experience
The day starts with pickup and a drive to the volcano's slopes, where you board an all-terrain vehicle for the ascent. Once you reach the trailhead, you walk a shaded nature trail through dry tropical forest, moving at your own pace with your guide. The path takes you through several viewpoints and ends at a gazebo where the forest opens onto the volcanic landscape: the spot where most of the photographs happen. The walking is relatively easy, though it does require a moderate level of fitness.
After the hike, you drive thirty minutes to Asososca lagoon, a crater lake with warm volcanic waters. Here you swim and relax while looking out at the nearby volcanoes. Lunch (chicken tacos and a natural drink) is prepared and eaten by the water's edge. The whole day runs seven to eight hours from start to finish.
Your guide speaks English or Spanish and knows the terrain and the volcano's history. You'll carry walking sticks and wear a gas mask during the hike. Admission to the reserve and all transport by vehicle are included. Children from age eight are welcome on the tour.
