The experience
The day starts with a 50-minute transfer across rural communities and crop fields on sandy roads, heading toward the volcano base at 300 meters above sea level. Once there, you hike up a fairly easy rocky trail for about an hour to reach the summit at 726 meters. Your certified guide sets the pace and stops for photos of the volcanic landscape and the rural area around it. You'll see how people live and work in this zone.
At the top, you put on your safety gear (a fitted suit, helmet, leather gloves, mask and goggles), and step onto your wooden board. The ride down takes about five minutes. After you reach the bottom, you get a cold drink before heading back to León in the air-conditioned vehicle. The guide carries a camera throughout, so you leave with photos and videos of the run.
You can carry your board and gear up the mountain yourself, or pay a local porter a small amount to carry them for you, so the hike stays enjoyable. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and children from age 6 are welcome. All safety equipment is provided, and entry to the volcano is included in the price.
