The experience

The tour starts on the south side of the city, where your guide points out De Rotterdam (the massive building designed by Rem Koolhaas), and Pakhuismeesteren, a transformed warehouse. From the rooftop of Pakhuismeesteren you get panoramic views across the skyline. Then comes the water taxi: a short, spectacular ride under the Erasmus Bridge that gives you a completely different angle on the city's layout and its relationship to the water.

After the taxi you walk the Old Harbour area, where Rotterdam's origins lie, and see Het Witte Huis and the Cube Houses. The rooftop visit depends on when you go: weekends take you to the top of Het Witte Huis itself for city views. Weekdays you visit the rooftop terrace on the 10th floor of the Timmerhuis. Either way, you're standing somewhere most visitors never reach. The tour ends in Markthal, the enormous indoor market, where you taste a stroopwafel and meet an entrepreneur at one of the stands. You also get two postcards by Rotterdam photographer Ossip van Duivenbode and a voucher for a discount at one of the Markthal vendors.
