The experience
The tour begins at Rotterdam Central Station, where your guide introduces the city's architectural transformation. From there you walk past the Town Hall and St. Lawrence Church, the only remnant of medieval Rotterdam, and learn what the 1940 bombing destroyed and why so much of what you see was built after 1945. The route takes you through the Kruiskade and Lijnbaan, the main shopping streets rebuilt in the 1950s on the footprint of the old city, then across the Luchtsingel, a 390-meter wooden pedestrian bridge that reconnected a neglected neighborhood to the center.
The Markthal appears midway through the walk: a horseshoe-shaped covered market designed by MVRDV with an archway structure and interior artwork of oversized fruits, vegetables, and fish. From there the route continues to the Old Harbor, where the Cube Houses sit at unusual angles, and the Erasmus Bridge spans the Maas River. You'll also see the Delftsche Poort, a steel reconstruction of a 1764 city gate, and the Timmerhuis, an OMA-designed building that anchors the modern skyline.
The walk covers roughly 2 hours at a pace suitable for all fitness levels. Your guide answers questions as you move through the streets, so the route becomes a conversation about how the city rebuilt itself and what daily life looks like now. Strollers and prams are welcome, and service animals are allowed.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, German and Dutch.
What exactly is the Markthal and what will I see inside it?
The Markthal is a covered market designed by MVRDV with a distinctive horseshoe-shaped structure. Inside you'll find many restaurants and a striking artwork featuring oversized images of fruits, vegetables, seeds, fish, flowers and insects painted across the interior walls.
Why does Rotterdam have so much modern architecture compared to other European cities?
Rotterdam was heavily bombed during World War II, which destroyed much of the medieval city center. The postwar reconstruction beginning in the 1950s gave architects the opportunity to rebuild the entire downtown, which is why you see so many modern buildings and why the city looks so different from older European cities.
Will I have time to go inside any of the buildings or churches on the tour?
The St. Lawrence Church is free to enter, and you're welcome to go inside during the tour. The other stops (the Markthal, Cube Houses, Old Harbor and bridges) are viewed from outside as you walk through the city.
Is this tour the same whether I book private, small-group or large-group?
All three options follow the same 2-hour route and visit the same landmarks with a local guide. The difference is group size: private means just you and your party; small-group is typically under twelve people; large-group is the standard shared departure. The stops, pace and guide commentary remain the same.
How much walking is involved and what kind of shoes should I wear?
The tour is 2 hours of steady walking through the city center on paved streets and pedestrian zones. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The pace is suitable for all fitness levels, and the route is flat with no steep hills.
