The experience
Kathmandu Durbar Square anchors the first half of the tour. The plaza spreads in front of the old royal palace (originally at Dattaraya, later moved here), and holds the palaces of the Malla and Shah kings who ruled the city. Courtyards and temples surround the main structures, and the square takes its alternate name, Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square, from a statue of Hanuman at the palace entrance. The architecture showcases centuries of Newar craftsmanship, and the site carries UNESCO World Heritage status.
The second stop is Swayambhunath Temple, known locally as the monkey temple because of the large tribe living there. Situated on a hilltop, it requires a considerable walk to reach, but the effort opens views across the entire Kathmandu Valley. The stupa is said to have emerged spontaneously over 2,000 years ago when the valley formed from a primordial lake, making it one of the oldest in the region. Worshipers from Buddhist and Hindu backgrounds come here together, and the site holds the country's largest Buddha statue, along with prayer wheels and Buddhist paintings displayed in the monasteries.
A private vehicle picks you up from your hotel or airport and drops you back there after the temple visit. Your guide speaks English and carries two mineral water bottles per person for the walk and the stops.
Is this one for you?Four hours leaves the rest of your day free in Kathmandu, so you can fit this tour into a morning or afternoon and still have time for other activities or neighborhoods. The private vehicle and guide mean no waiting for group departures or other travelers.
