The Experience

Ever wondered what silence actually sounds like? I didn’t, not really, until we rolled out of Swakopmund on these chunky-tired fat bikes, following our guide Thomas past pastel houses and kids waving from stoops. The air smelled faintly salty—ocean somewhere just out of sight—and then suddenly, town was gone. It’s just us and this wide, pale riverbed, dry as old bread but somehow alive if you look close. Thomas stopped to show us tiny beetle tracks zigzagging in the sand—he called it “the world’s slowest traffic.”

The first dune looked taller than I’d pictured (my legs definitely noticed), but there’s something weirdly satisfying about pushing up loose sand and then flying down the other side. You don’t really get speed—more like a soft whoosh and that feeling of sinking, almost floating. The sun hit my arms and I could taste dust in my mouth; not unpleasant, just real.
