The experience
You meet your guide in Swakopmund and drive together to Walvis Bay, where you air down your tyres and exchange notes about vehicles before heading past the Salt Mine onto the beach. From there the route climbs into the dune belt at Sandwich Harbour (where the sea meets the dune face), and the real driving starts. You follow your guide's vehicle through steep slip faces and up tall dunes, with radio contact the whole way. The guide shares driving techniques as you go and steps in if you need help navigating a section. This is not a passenger tour. You're behind the wheel the entire time, making decisions about line and speed while the guide watches and advises.
The route takes in the Ramsar Wetland with its thousands of waders, flamingos and pelicans, and you'll spot seals and jackals on the beach sections. The pink waters of the Salt Mine are visible from the route. After the dune drive, you head back to Walvis Bay to re-inflate your tyres before returning to your accommodation. Lunch is included. The whole outing runs five to six hours from start to finish.
You can bring your own vehicle if your rental company permits it and your insurance covers Sandwich Harbour. Check both before booking. If your rental car is off-limits or you don't have one, you can rent a 4x4 from the operator. Your vehicle should be light and fully fuelled at the start. Leave extra water cans and jerry cans at home. Make sure you have a spare tyre and the tools to change it. Guides speak English or German. German guides are allocated on a first-come basis and are not guaranteed on every departure.
