The experience

The day starts on the water. The catamaran leaves the Waterfront at 08:30 and runs until around 12:00, giving you roughly three and a half hours to watch for dolphins, seals and pelicans as the boat moves through the bay. On good days, sunfish and whales appear during the whaling season. You'll stop at a 50,000-strong seal colony viewed from the sea, and snacks are served aboard. After returning to the Waterfront, your guide from the dune operation meets you at the Esplanade and heads inland toward Sandwich Harbor. The route takes you past the Pink Flamingos and the Pink Salt lakes of the Salt Mine, then along the shore for 60 kilometers. You'll see migratory birds (flamingos, pelicans, avocets, terns), and possibly seals and jackals. The drive enters the Namib Naukluft Park and climbs into the towering dunes of Sandwich Harbor. The most dramatic section is the Lange Wand, where a narrow strip of beach sits between sea and dunes. The guide times this crossing around the tide.
