The experience

Sandwich Harbour sits where the oldest desert in the world drops straight into the Atlantic, and the only way to reach it is by 4x4 across the beach. Your guide picks you up from your hotel and drives first through the Walvis Bay lagoon, where you stop to watch Greater and Lesser Flamingos, Great White Pelicans, Marsh Sandpipers and other bird species. You pass the salt works and pause at the pink water lakes for photos before heading south into Namib Naukluft Park.

The drive itself is the experience: you travel along the coastline on sand, then onto the beach itself, where the vehicle climbs into giant dunes that rise straight from the ocean. Along the way, you may spot oryx, springbok, jackals, Cape fur seals, ostriches and brown hyenas moving through the desert. The landscape shifts constantly (dunes, ocean, salt flats, bird colonies), and there is no road, only the beach and the sand.

At Sandwich Harbour, your guide stops at a viewpoint overlooking the dunes and the Atlantic, sets up a table with snacks and sparkling wine, and you sit with the desert and ocean in front of you. Photographers find this stop essential. The return journey retraces the route, giving you time to absorb what you have seen. The whole tour takes 4 to 5 hours, and national park fees, lunch and refreshments are included. Note that drones are not permitted on this tour.
