The experience
The tour starts in Walvis Bay and heads south through the Ramsar Walvis Bay Wetland, where up to 250,000 birds of 54 species gather: pink flamingos, pelicans, plovers, sandpipers and endemic species. You'll pass the striking pink waters of Africa's largest evaporation pond salt mine before the landscape opens onto the beach. The route follows the coastline to Sandwich Harbour, where towering dunes rise directly from the Atlantic Ocean.
As the sun begins to set, the dune drive becomes the centerpiece. Your guide takes you over rolling sands to a viewpoint positioned for the golden hour, when the sky shifts through warm colours and the waves carve into the dunes below. At high tide, the access itself can turn into an adventure. The knowledgeable guide shares insights into the desert ecosystem and its wildlife while you take in the endless views of sand meeting sea. The tour ends with a relaxing sundowner stop, drinks in hand, watching the light fade over the water.
The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the tour includes beer, cider, bottled water and cold drinks. Guides speak English or German (German-speaking guides are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be guaranteed during peak season or when cruise ships dock). Pickup is included. Cruise passengers should note that pickup begins an hour after docking, with departure no later than an hour and a half after that. The tour requires a minimum of two participants and runs four to five hours.

Is this one for you?Book the private option if your group is six or fewer and you want the route and timing to fit your schedule alone. The shared tour works for independent travelers who don't mind joining others and prefer a lower cost. The four to five hour commitment means you'll need to plan the rest of your day around the sunset timing, which is the whole point. The viewpoint is positioned for golden hour, and arriving earlier or later misses it.
