The experience

The day starts in the Walvis Bay lagoon wetlands, a Ramsar Convention site where up to 250,000 birds gather across 54 species: pelicans, flamingos, plovers and sandpipers among them. The guide drops tire pressure to cross the sand and points out the birds as the landscape opens up. From there the route heads toward the coast where dunes rise and fall, narrowing to a strip of beach where the desert meets the sea. A dune drive climbs to the Sandwich Harbour viewpoint, where the bay spreads below surrounded by Nara bush and red dunes against green water and blue sky.

Lunch happens in the quiet of the dunes with a view. Just you, the guide and the landscape. After eating, there is time for walks on the dunes and beach. The return route cuts through the desert where a game drive may turn up ostriches, oryx, jackals or springbok. Along the shore, seals rest or play in the shallows. If luck holds, dolphins and whales pass by. Thousands of birds line the route back to Walvis Bay, where the vehicle refuels and air pressure goes back up before the drive to your hotel. The full day runs seven hours.
