The Namib's smallest residents are the hardest to spot.

A guided walking tour through the outer rim of Dorob National Park's dune belt, where you track the Namib's "Little Five": beetles, geckos, lizards and other tiny desert creatures adapted to extreme heat and sand. The tour runs 3 to 4 hours with pickup from Swakopmund accommodations. Water is provided. A guide in English or German leads the way on foot after a short drive into the dunes.

The experience

The tour starts with a drive a short distance into the dunes, then you set out on foot with your guide to hunt for the desert's smallest inhabitants. The "Little Five" are not the famous big cats and elephants of the savanna. They're the sidewinder snake, beetles, geckos, lizards and other creatures that have engineered their survival in one of the world's harshest environments. Your guide teaches you how to read the sand for tracks, spot the camouflaged animals and understand the plants and flora that keep this ecosystem alive.

Dorob National Park, Namibia's youngest national park, wraps around Swakopmund and protects the outer rim of the dune belt where the desert meets the Atlantic. The landscape looks barren at first, but once you slow down and look closely, the life becomes visible: a sidewinder's S-shaped track in the sand, a beetle's burrow, a gecko's shadow under a rock. The guide points out adaptations you would not notice alone: how certain beetles collect fog for water, why lizards move the way they do, which plants flower after rare rains.

The walk is moderate in pace and covers the outer dune rim rather than deep desert, so the terrain is manageable. Water is provided throughout. Pickup and drop-off happen at your Swakopmund accommodation, so you do not arrange transport separately. The tour is available as a standalone booking or as part of a cruise ship excursion option.

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and German.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What are the Namib's Little Five?

The Little Five are the tiny desert dwellers adapted to the Namib's extreme conditions: sidewinder snakes, beetles, geckos, lizards and other small creatures. Unlike the famous Big Five of African safaris, these animals are camouflaged and require a trained eye to spot, which is what the guide teaches you to do.

How long does the walking tour take?

The tour runs 3 to 4 hours total, including the short drive into the dunes and the walk itself. The pace is moderate and stays on the outer rim of the dune belt rather than deep into the desert.

What is included in the tour price?

Water is provided throughout the tour. Pickup and drop-off from your Swakopmund accommodation are included. The guide speaks English or German.

Is this tour suitable for someone with limited hiking experience?

The walking is moderate and covers the outer dune rim on relatively flat terrain, so it does not require advanced hiking skills. However, the tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy, and you should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness.
