The experience

The drive heads 45 km east from Swakopmund into the Namib Desert, one of the world's oldest deserts. Your guide explains the flora and fauna of the region as you travel, building context for what you'll see. The Welwitschia Mirabilis (a plant with only two leaves that can live over a thousand years) grows in this harsh landscape with almost no water. The leaves spread several metres across while roots reach roughly a metre down. You'll visit the plant on Welwitschia Drive, where the scale and age of what survives in such conditions becomes tangible.

From there the route continues to the Moon Landscape, a vista of eroded hills and valleys shaped by thousands of years of the Swakop River cutting through stone. The terrain looks otherworldly: bare, carved, and vast. A 12 km side-trip north leads to Goanikontes, a farm and oasis dating from 1848 that sits beside the Swakop River amid desert mountains. This is where lunch happens, a picnic at the rest camp surrounded by the lunar landscape itself. The location serves as both a meal stop and a moment to absorb the scale of what the desert contains.

After lunch and the oasis, the tour returns to Swakopmund or Walvis Bay, where your driver drops you at your accommodation. The whole day runs six hours from pickup to drop-off.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly is the Welwitschia plant and why is it worth seeing?

The Welwitschia Mirabilis is one of Earth's oldest living plant species, capable of surviving over a thousand years in the Namib Desert with almost no water. It has only two leaves that spread several metres across, with roots reaching roughly a metre down. The plant's scientific name honours Friedrich Welwitsch, the first European to describe it, and "mirabilis" refers to its remarkable ability to thrive in such harsh, apparently waterless conditions.

How long does the tour take and what are the four main stops?

The tour runs six hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. The four main stops are Spitzkoppe mountain, the Namib Desert itself where you learn about its ecosystem, the Welwitschia Drive where you see the ancient plants, and the Moon Landscape with its eroded hills and valleys carved by the Swakop River.

Is lunch included, and where do you eat?

Lunch is included as a picnic at Goanikontes, a farm and oasis beside the Swakop River that dates from 1848. The rest camp sits amid desert mountains in the lunar landscape, making the meal stop itself part of the experience. Bottled water is also provided throughout the day.

Does the tour visit Goanikontes, or is that optional?

Goanikontes is a 12 km side-trip north from the Moon Landscape and serves as the picnic lunch location. It's included as part of the tour route, situated in the lunar landscape amid the Namib Naukluft and Dorob National Parks.
