Red ochre, starlight and the stories only an insider can tell

A 5-day tour through remote Namibian tribal communities led by Beauty Tomona, a Himba guide who brings you into villages as a guest rather than an observer. You'll learn the red-ochre traditions of the Himba, witness the Victorian dress and cattle culture of the Herero, and spend a night under the stars in a village camp. Private transport and meals are included. Children from age 3 are welcome.

The experience

The route moves through three distinct tribal territories over five days, anchored by stays at Dolomite Camp (a luxury tented chalet perched on a ridge above Etosha's western plains), and Opuwo Country Lodge, a hilltop lodge overlooking the Kunene mountains. Beauty Tomona, your guide, is Himba herself, which shifts the entire dynamic: you're not being shown these communities from the outside but welcomed into them. The itinerary breaks the standard safari rhythm with a two-hour drive into the Kunene bush to a remote Himba village, where you spend the afternoon and evening learning about otjize (the red-ochre makeup that defines Himba identity), singing and dancing by the camp fire, and sleeping under stars in the village itself.

Day one includes a stop at Otjiwarongo Crocodile Farm: a break in the journey where you can watch Nile crocodiles from hatchlings to massive adults, and eat crocodile steaks in a garden restaurant if you want to. You then enter Etosha through Galton Gate, a restricted sector that protects rare Black Rhino and Mountain Zebra and keeps wildlife sightings intimate. The second day takes you to the Ovazemba and Ovahakawona communities to see their intricate hair-braiding and traditional jewelry before the drive to the Himba village. On day three, you spend the morning with the Himba and visit a nearby Herero community to see the striking contrast of their Victorian-style long dresses and cattle-herding traditions. Day four shifts to cheetah encounters at a sanctuary: you meet resident "tame" cheetahs for close-range photography in the morning, then join an afternoon drive into a 7,000-hectare reserve to watch rescued wild cheetahs during feeding. Every visit supports cheetah rescue and protection in Namibia.
