The experience

You arrive in Maputo with a free day and no clear map of what to see. A private guide picks you up and spends the next seven to eight hours walking you through the layers of the city: the Portuguese colonial architecture, the independence monuments, the markets where locals shop, and the studios where Mozambican artists work. The tour moves at your pace, stops where you want to linger, and skips what doesn't interest you. You're not following a fixed itinerary with a group. You're following the guide's knowledge of a city most visitors never get to know.

The landmarks anchor the day. Independence Square holds the Samora Machel statue, a nine-meter bronze sculpture cast in North Korea and installed after Mozambique's independence in 1975. The Cathedral, built in the 1930s and 1940s, is where Pope Francis stood during his 2019 visit. The Central Market, built in 1901 with iron elements imported from Belgium, is where you can buy cassava leaves and get tips from vendors on how to cook Matapa with prawns: a dish that tastes nothing like what you'll find in a restaurant. The Iron House, designed by Gustave Eiffel and shipped pre-fabricated from Belgium in 1892, sits as a curiosity: an iron structure in a hot climate, never quite fitting its purpose. The railway station ranks among the three most beautiful in the world on an American magazine's list.

The arts side of the day takes you into working spaces. Núcleo, an artists' association and school, has a gallery and studios where painters and sculptors work while you watch. Gonçalo Mabunda's workshop is filled with sculptures and thrones made from the remains of weapons (shotguns, AK-47s, rockets) transformed into art that speaks against war. You'll also visit a handicraft market with restaurants, where you can buy souvenirs and eat lunch. The guide speaks English or Portuguese, the vehicle has air conditioning, and lunch is included in the price.
