The experience
The tour runs four and a half hours, which means you see the major colonial landmarks and the modern city without losing the rest of your day. A private car picks you up, and your guide speaks English or Portuguese and knows which stops matter most to what you came for. The route is flexible: if you want to linger at the Railway Station (an imposing 1913 building designed by three architects), or skip it for the Fortress instead, the guide adjusts. The Natural History Museum holds one of the world's only elephant fetuses from World War I, along with embalmed lions, giraffes, hippos and rhinoceroses from the African savannas, plus Mozambican tribal instruments and statues. Independence Square anchors the city's political history, where a statue of Samora Machel replaced the colonial monument in 1975.
You'll stop at Chamanculo, the historic neighborhood that holds 158,000 residents and the city's oldest building, the yellow house, and the FEIMA craft fair, a quiet market where you can buy local handicrafts and sample Mozambican dishes. The Maputo Katembe Bridge crossing gives a full view of the city from the beach side. Water, peanuts, nuts and fruit come with the tour, and WiFi is available on board. The number of stops can shift depending on how long you spend at each place, so the guide works with your pace, not against it.
