The experience

The tour starts at Independence Square, where Mozambique declared independence in 1975 and where the statue of Samora Machel stands. From there you walk to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, built in the 1940s in modern European style and still an important spiritual center for the city. The route then takes you through Jardim Tunduru, a botanical garden planted during the colonial period with centuries-old tropical trees and sculptures, before arriving at Maputo Fortress: an 18th-century defensive structure that now functions as a historical museum, preserving cannons and colonial artifacts from the city's founding.

The Central Railway Station, inaugurated in 1916, is one of Africa's most beautiful railway buildings and marks the beginning of Maputo's urban growth as a commercial hub. You'll spend time at Mercado Central, one of the oldest and most authentic markets in the city, opened at the start of the 20th century, where vendors sell fresh tropical fruits, spices, fish, seafood, and local products: a place to see how residents shop and understand the country's agricultural and cultural diversity. The tour also includes a stop at the craft market, where local artists sell wood carvings, paintings, and traditional products.

Water, soft drinks, juice, and snacks are provided throughout the walk. The guide offers assistance at each stop and can conduct the tour in English, Spanish, Portuguese, or French depending on your preference.
