The experience
The tour starts at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Maputo, a Gothic-inspired Roman Catholic cathedral where the cross of Portuguese caravels from the 15th century stands out. From there you move through Independence Square, the focal point of the capital, where a statue of Samora Machel, Mozambique's first president, replaced the colonial-era monument after independence in 1975. The Municipal Council Building, a neoclassical structure at the head of the square, anchors the government center of the city.
The Maputo Central Market, inaugurated in 1901, is a work of iron architecture with elements imported from Belgium. Built by David de Carvalho, it sells everything from fresh produce and fragrant spices to souvenirs and household goods. Nearby stands the Iron House, a prefabricated structure shipped from Belgium in 1892 as one of Gustave Eiffel's projects. The French-Mozambican Cultural Center, inaugurated in 1995 on the ruins of the old Hotel Clube from 1898, carries the same Victorian-era iron style that defines much of Maputo's architectural heritage.
The Maputo Railway Station, one of the most beautiful train stations in the world, features marble pillars, wrought iron work and a massive central dome. The Tunduru Botanical Garden, named after the Tanzanian region that was home to freedom fighters against Portuguese colonialism, offers green space in the city center. The Natural History Museum, founded in 1911 and housed since 1933 in a Manueline-style building, rounds out the cultural stops. The tour ends at FEIMA, the craft, flower and gastronomy fair, where you can buy souvenirs and eat.
