The experience

The tour opens at Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the white cathedral built in the 1930s–40s by Marcial Simões Freitas e Costa, a railway deputy who worked without pay. Inside are artworks by Francisco Franco, Simões Freitas and António Lino, plus stained glass windows made in the Netherlands during the war. Some panes show damage from a 2007 bunker explosion. From there the route moves through the town hall (designed in the 1940s with models of old Lourenço Marques inside), the Samora Machel statue cast in North Korea and standing nine metres tall, and the French Mozambican cultural center, which opened as a social club in 1889 and now hosts live music and photo exhibitions.

The itinerary includes Gustave Eiffel's iron house, brought pre-fabricated from Belgium in 1892 and now housing Mozambique's cultural heritage authority; Tunduro garden, where fruit bats hang in the trees and Saturday weddings fill the grounds with singing; and the central market, built in 1901 with iron imported from Belgium, where you can buy cassava leaves for matapa and get cooking tips from the vendors. The mosque on Rua da Mesquita, dating to 1887, sits in what was once the Indian quarter and reflects the country's religious tolerance. The train station, completed in 1908–1910 and ranked third most beautiful worldwide, displays two old steam locomotives and hosts an active gallery in its former waiting room. Scenes from the film Blood Diamond were shot here. Bagamoyo street, with its French colonial ironwork and verandas, carries the feel of New Orleans, while the fortress Nossa Senhora da Conceição holds a coffin carved by Paulo Come containing the remains of Ngungunhana, King of Gaza, alongside the statue of his conqueror Mouzinho de Albulquerque. The tour ends at the artists association, where painters and sculptors work in open ateliers, and the FEIMA handicraft market with restaurants and souvenirs.

The guide provides context on the colonial architecture, the 1910 Portuguese revolution's impact on the church, the city's name changes after independence, and the influences (Arabic, Portuguese, Chinese, British and Indian) woven into Mozambican food and culture. Bottled water and snacks are included. The vehicle is air-conditioned and parking fees are covered.
