Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Maputo by bike

  • Start at office in Sommerschield
  • Visit Cathedral of Maputo
  • See the Iron House
  • Explore Maputo Railway Station
  • Walk through Mercado Central
  • Shop for souvenirs at FEIMA
  • Return to office in Sommerschield

The experience

You start and finish at the office in Sommerschield, a low-traffic neighborhood that gives you room to get comfortable on the bike before the route proper begins. The guide leads you past the Cathedral of Maputo, built in 1944 and still holding its original altar work, stained glass and paintings. From there you move to the Iron House (a prefabricated structure shipped from Belgium and installed in the city), which now sits in front of the botanic garden. The pace is yours to set. Maputo's straight streets make it hard to lose your way, and the city is safe to cycle through.

The Railway Station, completed in 1910, is considered one of the world's most beautiful. You'll see locomotives from the 19th century inside and photographs marking important moments in the country's history. Restaurants in the station serve Mozambican food if you want to stop. The Central Market, built in 1903, is the heart of the route: the architecture and the vendors (especially the women who run the stalls) are what most travelers remember. If you want to pick up a souvenir afterward, the guide can point you toward FEIMA, a craft market with affordable arts and crafts that represent Mozambique.

A helmet and bicycle padlock are provided, along with a city map. The four-hour loop gives you time to move between stops without rushing, though you control how long you linger at each one.
