The experience

The minibus picks you up at your Agadir hotel at 8am and heads inland toward Tiout. The oasis sits on a hillside overlooking Berber villages, a pocket of palms and water that has drawn visitors for years. You ride a donkey through the grove (the local way to move through it), and get a sense of how the place works and what draws people here. Lunch happens at a resident's home, not a restaurant, so you eat what they cook and sit where they live.

After Tiout, the route turns toward Taroudant, a walled city near the Sahara that locals call a smaller version of Marrakech. The medina and souk fill the interior: narrow passages, stalls, the rhythm of a working market. You can climb the ramparts that ring the city for a view out across the countryside, the walls themselves the main landmark. The driver collects you around 5pm for the return to Agadir, arriving back at your hotel near 5pm.
