The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound of boots crunching on loose gravel as we left Imlil behind. Our guide, Hassan, stopped to point out wild thyme growing by the path — he pinched a bit and told us to smell it. It was sharp and earthy, almost like the air itself. The mule carrying our bags kept glancing back at us (I swear he judged my pace). We wound through Aremd village where kids waved and an old man offered us mint tea — I tried to say thank you in Darija but just got a big smile in return.

The climb past Sidi Chamarouch was steeper than I’d expected. There’s this shrine built into whitewashed rocks — people leave little offerings there, bits of cloth or coins. The wind picked up as we zigzagged higher; I could taste dust and snow in the air. By late afternoon we reached the refuge, pitched our tents nearby. Dinner was hot soup and bread cooked by our camp cook (I never caught his name — should’ve asked). That night, wrapped in my sleeping bag listening to distant dogs barking down-valley, I barely slept but didn’t really mind.

Summit day started before dawn. My legs felt heavy but there was this weird excitement buzzing under my skin. Hassan led us across frozen streams and patches of scree that slid underfoot — he kept saying “slowly-slowly” like a mantra. Sunrise hit just as we neared the top of Mount Toubkal; everything turned gold for a minute. Standing at 4167 meters with the whole Atlas range rolling out below… honestly, I still think about that view when city life gets too loud. The way down was tough on my knees but somehow lighter in spirit. Back in Marrakech by evening, dusty and tired — but kind of proud too.

What’s included

Your two days include hotel pickup and drop-off in Marrakech, all transport out to Imlil village and back again, hot meals cooked fresh by your camp cook, overnight camping near the mountain refuge with all gear provided, plus an English-speaking local guide leading you every step (and yes—a friendly mule carries your bags so you don’t have to).
