“How do you feel about snow in June?” That’s what our guide asked as we laced up our boots in Imlil, the air still cool even after the drive from Marrakech. The village was waking up—donkeys clattering past, someone baking bread nearby, that faint earthy smell you only get in mountain towns. After mint tea, we started up the Aït Mizane valley, passing stone houses and kids waving from behind low walls.

The path wound higher through Aremd and then to Sidi Chamharouch, where locals believe the shrine brings good luck for safe passage. There was a steady hum of voices—trekkers swapping stories, guides calling out greetings in Berber and French. By midday, the sun felt sharp on my neck but the breeze kept it comfortable. Our bags rode on mules ahead of us, their bells echoing off the rocks. Reaching the Toubkal Refuge at 3,200 meters felt like stepping into another world; dinner tasted extra hearty after hours on the trail.

We set out before sunrise for the summit push. Headlamps bobbed along the rocky switchbacks while everything else stayed silent except for boots crunching over frost. The last stretch was slow going—thin air and loose stones—but when we reached 4,167 meters, it was all worth it. You could see Marrakech far below and even a hint of desert haze toward the Sahara. After some photos (and catching our breath), we made our way back down to Imlil for a well-earned ride home.
