The Experience

We started winding out of Marrakech before sunrise, the city still half-asleep behind us. The road up to Imlil is full of little switchbacks and tiny villages—kids waving, mules clopping past. Our guide Hassan cracked jokes in three languages and pointed out walnut trees along the Mizane Valley. The air smelled different up there, sharper somehow. When we stopped by a waterfall for photos, I got splashed—didn’t expect that in Morocco, honestly.

The walk up to Toubkal Refuge took most of the day but never felt rushed. We passed through Aremd and then Sidi Chamarouch—a jumble of white stones where locals believe wishes stick if you whisper them right. Hassan told me to try saying one in Arabic; he laughed when I tried (definitely butchered it). Lunch was bread and olives under a patch of cloud-shadow. By the time we reached the refuge, my legs were jelly but the mint tea tasted like victory.

The next morning was just dark and cold at first—stars overhead, boots crunching on frost. The climb to Mount Toubkal’s summit isn’t technical but it’s steep, with scree that slides underfoot. I remember my breath fogging in my headlamp beam and someone quietly singing behind me (I think it was Youssef from our group). Suddenly you’re at the top—4167 meters—and everything opens up: valleys below, peaks stretching forever. Sunrise came fast, gold pouring over the Atlas mountains. I didn’t even take many photos; just stood there shivering and grinning like an idiot.

The way down felt lighter somehow—maybe just relief or maybe because Hassan handed out dried apricots halfway back to base camp. We had lunch at the refuge again before heading down to Imlil where our driver waited with more tea and a tired smile. Back in Marrakech that evening, my boots were filthy and my heart felt oddly quiet—still thinking about that view above the clouds.
