The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound — that low hum of traffic fading behind us as we left Marrakech, replaced by wind curling through the Atlas Mountains. Our driver, Hassan, pointed out Tizi-n'Tichka Pass before I even realized we were climbing so high. The road twisted up past tiny villages where kids waved at our van, and every now and then we’d stop for mint tea or just to stare at those red cliffs. I tried to take photos but nothing really caught how sharp the air felt up there.

We reached Ait Ben Haddou just as the light started turning everything gold. There was this smell — dust, maybe cumin from someone’s kitchen? Our guide told stories about old movies filmed here (I only recognized one). Walking through those kasbah walls made me feel small in a good way. That night in Dades Valley, I could hear water rushing somewhere below my window, even though it looked bone dry outside. Dinner was tagine; I still think about that sauce.

The next morning was Todra Gorge — cool shadows between canyon walls, echoing with laughter from a group of kids splashing each other in the river. After that it was all desert. Palm groves faded into sand and suddenly there were camels waiting for us near Merzouga. My camel’s name was Zizou; he seemed grumpy but patient (can’t blame him). Riding into Erg Chebbi at sunset felt unreal — orange dunes, sky going purple, sand cold under my hands when I slid off for photos.

That night at the Berber camp, everyone gathered around a fire while someone played drums and sang in Tamazight. The stars overhead didn’t seem real — honestly, I lost count after a while. We tried sandboarding (I wiped out immediately) and swapped stories with travelers from Spain and Germany. Woke up early for sunrise over the Sahara; it was quiet except for one rooster somewhere far off. Still not sure if I dreamt that part or not.
