The Experience
“What do you mean we’re stopping for coffee here?” I remember asking our driver just as the High Atlas started to feel endless. The café was nothing fancy — plastic chairs, mint tea that tasted like it had been brewed since sunrise, and a view that made me forget my phone for once. Our guide Youssef pointed out the snowy peaks behind us and laughed when I tried to pronounce Tizi N’Tichka (I still don’t get it right). Somewhere between Marrakech and Ait Ben Haddou, the landscape turned from city noise to silence broken only by sheep bells and the odd truck rumbling past.
Ait Ben Haddou looked almost painted onto the hillside — all mud brick and sun-bleached wood. We wandered through narrow lanes where a kid sold dates from a basket and an old man nodded at us but didn’t say much. Lunch was tagine with more bread than I could finish (I tried). By the time we reached Dades Valley, my shoes were full of red dust and my head was spinning from all the switchbacks. The hotel was simple but comfortable; I slept like I’d walked across Morocco myself.
The next morning smelled like strong coffee and something sweet frying in oil. Tinghir’s palm groves flashed by — green against so much rock — then suddenly we were surrounded by those famous pink cliffs. The road felt endless until Merzouga appeared out of nowhere. Camels waited at the edge of Erg Chebbi; mine was called Bob Marley (not joking). Riding into the dunes at sunset was quieter than I expected — just sand underfoot, wind in my ears, sky turning orange then purple. Dinner in camp tasted smoky and everyone tried drumming after dark, though honestly only our camel guide could keep a beat.
I woke up before dawn because someone whispered “sunrise.” Standing on top of a dune with cold sand under my feet and nothing but sky ahead — that’s stuck with me longer than any photo. After breakfast, we rode back out to meet our minibus for Marrakech. It felt weird leaving so soon; three days isn’t enough for the desert but maybe it never is.
