The Experience

The tour leaves Marrakech at 7:30 a.m. on day one, crossing the Tizi N'Tichka pass through the Atlas Mountains with stops for views. You'll visit an argan oil producer to see the extraction process, then reach Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village and UNESCO World Heritage site that has stood in for ancient Rome in films like Gladiator. After lunch there, the route continues through Ouarzazate and the Valley of Roses to Dades Gorge, where you spend the first night at a hotel with a pool, dinner and breakfast included.

Day two takes you from Dades through Todra Gorge toward Merzouga. The landscape shifts from mountain canyons to open desert as you approach the Sahara's edge. Once you arrive at Merzouga, a guide welcomes you with tea and explains what comes next: you can reach the luxury camp either by camel caravan (about an hour) or by 4x4 jeep, depending on what you choose. The camp itself has something most desert camps don't—a private shower and toilet inside each tent—so you're not choosing between comfort and authenticity. You'll watch the sunset from the dunes, have dinner with traditional music playing, and if it's someone's birthday, the camp arranges a cake and celebration.

After breakfast and a sunrise watch in the camp, day three is the return to Marrakech, crossing back through the desert and Anti-Atlas mountains. You'll stop for lunch along the way and arrive in Marrakech by early evening. The tour includes the camel ride or jeep option, sandboarding in the dunes, and the Berber music and stargazing at night. Lunches and drinks during the drive days are optional; the camp meals are included. A live guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic throughout.

Is this one for you? Most desert tours from Marrakech either skip the mountain gorges or rush through them to spend one night in a basic camp. This one holds all three—Dades, Todra and the Sahara dunes—across three days with a camp that has a real shower and toilet in the tent, so you're not choosing between the desert experience and basic comfort.

Top questions

What is Ait Ben Haddou and why does the tour stop there?

Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified village in the Atlas foothills that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour visits the famous Kasbah there because it is one of Morocco's most recognizable landmarks and has been the backdrop for major films including Gladiator and The Jewel of the Nile.

Do I ride a camel the whole way to the desert camp, or can I take a jeep instead?

You have a choice. The camel caravan takes about an hour to reach the luxury camp in the dunes, while the 4x4 jeep is faster. Either way, you arrive at the same camp with the same facilities and evening activities.

What makes the camp different from other desert camps in Merzouga?

Each tent has a private shower and toilet inside it, which is unusual for Sahara camps at this price point. Most desert camps require you to use shared facilities or go without, so this one removes that trade-off.

Is sandboarding included, and do I need experience?

Sandboarding is included in the tour. The camp provides the boards, and it is suitable for all physical fitness levels, so no prior experience is needed.

What happens on the evening in the desert camp?

You'll have a traditional dinner while Berber musicians play live music. The camp also does stargazing that night, and if anyone in your group is celebrating a birthday, they arrange a cake and celebration.

How long does it take to drive back to Marrakech on day three?

You leave early to watch the sunrise from the camp, have breakfast there, and then drive back across the desert and mountains, stopping for lunch along the way. You arrive in Marrakech around 6:30 p.m.
