The Experience

We left Marrakech before sunrise — I remember the city was still half asleep, but our driver Youssef was already grinning and making jokes about coffee being “strong enough for camels.” The road up through the High Atlas Mountains felt endless at first, all switchbacks and little stone villages tucked into the folds. At Tizi n’Tichka pass, the air got thin and cold; I could smell woodsmoke from a roadside stall where we stopped for mint tea. Our guide pointed out Berber houses clinging to the cliffs — he grew up in one like that. It’s hard to imagine living there when the wind howls.

Ait Ben Haddou looked like something out of a movie (apparently it is — Gladiator or something?). We wandered through its red mudbrick alleys after lunch, dodging a few cats and an old man selling dates. Ouarzazate was dusty and bright, then suddenly we were winding through Dades Valley where pink roses grow wild along the riverbanks. That night in Dades Gorge, I lay awake listening to frogs and distant voices echoing off the rocks. The desert felt close already.

The next day was all movement — Todra Gorge’s sheer walls made me dizzy just looking up, and then there were endless palm oases flashing by until finally Merzouga appeared. Camels waited outside a low hotel; they’re bigger than you think (and bumpier). My guide Rashid tied my scarf “Berber style” so sand wouldn’t get in my mouth — he laughed at my first attempt. Riding into Erg Chebbi as sunset hit was… well, I still think about that light sometimes. The silence out there is different than any quiet I’ve known.

At camp, dinner tasted smoky and sweet (maybe cumin?), and someone played drums under a sky so full of stars it almost hurt your eyes. I tried sandboarding but mostly fell over — Rashid said I had “city balance.” We talked late into the night around the fire, trading stories with travelers from Spain and France while our hosts poured more tea than anyone could drink. Waking up before dawn to watch sunrise over those dunes was worth every yawn on the drive back to Marrakech. Honestly, some moments just stick with you longer than you expect.
