If you want to see Morocco beyond Marrakech in just one day, this tour gives you mountain roads, real Berber life glimpses, and a walk through history at Ait Ben Haddou—all without rushing.
The first thing that hit me was the cool morning air as we left Marrakech—still a bit sleepy, but you could already smell fresh bread from roadside stalls. Our driver weaved through the city’s edge before the road started climbing into the High Atlas Mountains. The switchbacks are no joke; if you get carsick, maybe skip breakfast. But wow, every turn opens up new views—patches of green fields, sheep dotting the hillsides, and tiny Berber villages clinging to rocky slopes. We stopped at a small café in Tizi n’Tichka Pass for mint tea. The owner’s radio played old chaabi songs, and you could hear goats somewhere nearby.
By late morning, we reached Ait Ben Haddou. It’s quieter than I expected—just a few locals selling dates and souvenirs by the entrance. Our guide explained how this ancient ksar has stood here for centuries, its mudbrick walls still holding strong against wind and sun. Walking through those narrow alleys feels like stepping into another time; you’ll spot faded movie posters (they filmed “Gladiator” here) and sometimes hear kids playing soccer behind the walls. Climbing up to the top is worth it for the view over the valley—bring water, it gets hot fast even in spring. On our way back, we passed Ouarzazate’s film studios but didn’t stop—next time, maybe.
Yes, families often join this tour. Infant seats are available if needed, and kids usually enjoy exploring the kasbah.
The drive takes about 3.5–4 hours each way depending on traffic and stops along the route.
You’ll need to walk uphill inside the kasbah; it can be uneven but is manageable for most fitness levels.
No meals are included, but there are cafés along the way where you can buy food or drinks.
Your ride is in an air-conditioned vehicle with a friendly driver who knows these roads well. Wheelchair access is available throughout transport options. If you’re traveling with infants or need special seating arrangements, just let us know—we’ve got you covered.
