The experience
The tour starts with an 8am pickup from your riad in Marrakech and heads south across the Tizi n'Tichka Pass through the High Atlas Mountains, where Berber villages cling to the slopes. You stop at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah that has stood in for ancient cities in films like Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator, and eat a Berber lunch with views of the fortress. The route then passes through the Valley of Roses (a region of terraced gardens and traditional villages that blooms into fragrant color each May) before arriving at Dades Valley in the evening, where you spend your first night in a hotel or auberge near Tinghir.
Day two takes you through Dades Gorge and its ancient kasbahs, then to Todra Gorge, where limestone cliffs rise above a narrow canyon carved by the Todra River. From there the drive continues to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. In the late afternoon you mount a camel for a 90-minute trek across the sand, stopping midway to watch the sunset, then ride on to a Berber desert camp where you're welcomed with mint tea. The evening includes Berber music, a campfire, and dinner under the stars before you sleep in the camp. The next morning you can take an optional sunrise camel trek before breakfast.
Day three begins with a 4x4 tour of the Erg Chebbi dunes, visiting a nomadic family settlement to see how they live, then heading to Khamlia, a town known for its gnawa music tradition and its history as a settlement of descendants from Mali. You explore Rissani's traditional market, where locals trade spices, dates, textiles and Berber pizza, and see the historic ksars and mausoleos of the Alaouita dynasty. You return to Merzouga for the evening and stay in a riad facing the dunes, with options to ride quads, watch live Berber music, or walk the dunes at sunset.
The final day is the return to Marrakech. After an early breakfast you drive north through Todra and Dades valleys, stopping in Kelaat Megouna for lunch, then cross back over the High Atlas through the Tizi N'tichka Pass. You arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or evening and are dropped at your accommodation or a local restaurant of your choice.

Is this one for you?Choose this tour if your guide needs to speak English, Spanish, French or Arabic fluently: the commentary on the Atlas villages, the kasbah's film history, and the desert camp's cultural details all depend on clear language. It's built for travelers who want the Sahara overnight experience without arranging the vehicle, camp or camel trek separately, and who prefer a fixed itinerary that holds all three nights' accommodation and the main activities together.

What's the camel trek actually like in Merzouga?
The camel trek runs 90 minutes across the Erg Chebbi dunes, starting in the late afternoon.
