The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the crunch of gravel under our tires as we left Marrakech — city sounds fading, replaced by this dry hush and the distant Atlas Mountains. Our driver, Youssef, had this habit of humming along to old rai songs on the radio. Somewhere near an argan cooperative, he pulled over so we could see how the oil’s made. The women inside worked with their hands fast but smiled when I tried to say “shukran.” I probably got it wrong. The smell of roasted nuts stuck to my fingers even after we left.
