The Experience
“You’ll see — the desert is never really silent,” our driver Youssef said as we left the city behind. I didn’t believe him until the van doors slid open and I heard this low hum — wind, maybe, or just the sound of nothing happening for miles. The drive from Marrakech was only about 40 minutes but felt like another planet; one minute it’s scooters and orange carts, next it’s just pale hills and that weird blue light you get before sunset. I kept thinking how close it all was to the city but how far it felt.
I’d never been on a quad bike before, so when our guide Fatima handed me a helmet and grinned (“Don’t worry, slow is good!”), I tried not to look nervous. The sand wasn’t soft — more gravelly, actually — and you could smell dust every time someone sped up ahead of us. There were kids waving from a distance, goats somewhere out of sight. After bumping along for what felt both long and short (time gets odd out there), we stopped near these low tents where camels were waiting. Their faces looked kind of unimpressed by us, honestly.
Getting onto a camel is awkward — they kneel down so suddenly that my heart jumped into my throat for a second. But then you’re up high and everything slows down: the air cools off fast after sunset, and all you hear are hooves in the grit and some distant laughter from another group. Fatima wrapped a scarf around my head “like Berber style,” she said (Li laughed when I tried to say thank you in Arabic — probably butchered it). We sipped mint tea in this woven tent while someone played music outside; the tea was sweet enough to make my teeth ache but somehow perfect right then.
Dinner was served under strings of lights with live music drifting over from another table. I still think about that lamb tagine — so tender you barely needed the fork. There was a moment when everyone just listened, quiet, to the singer’s voice echoing off the hills. I didn’t expect to feel so far away from everything, or to want to stay longer, but yeah. That’s how it ended up.
