The experience

I’ll admit, my first thought was just, how hard could it be to stand on a board with a giant kite? Turns out, there’s a lot more to it. The morning started at Bleukite Kitesurf School right by Essaouira’s beach, where the wind already felt like it had somewhere urgent to be. Our instructor, Youssef, handed me the harness and grinned like he’d seen this nervous face before. He spoke in three languages without missing a beat: French to the guy beside me, English for me, and then some Arabic jokes tossed at his friend across the sand. It made everything feel less intimidating somehow.

The first time the kite pulled, I nearly lost my balance: sand in my mouth (not recommended), but also this wild feeling of flight. Youssef kept talking into the headset clipped under my helmet, calmly reminding me to relax my arms and trust the wind. At one point he said something about “dancing with Mogador’s breeze”. I still don’t know if that was poetic or just his way of making fun of how stiff I looked. The bay itself is kind of hypnotic: salty air mixing with grilled sardines from a nearby stall, gulls shouting overhead, boards thumping as people launched off into the surf. There’s this energy all around that makes you want to try again even when you wipe out.

After a couple hours (felt both longer and shorter than it was), we took a break on the sand while Youssef showed us some photos: yes, they actually take pictures if you ask. My hair looked ridiculous but I didn’t care. I had managed to ride for maybe fifteen seconds straight without crashing. That felt like winning something big. At the end they gave me an IKO member card. I guess now I can rent gear anywhere that takes it.
